On the occasion of National Tree Day, the Cuoio di Toscana Consortium celebrates one year of the Breath for the Planet project. Launched last November, the initiative involved the planting of 50 trees in the San Bartolo a Cintoia Park, aiming to contribute to the ecological redevelopment plan of a 10-hectare area, which began in 2019.
"Sustainability is not a claim but a commitment that must translate into concrete actions," comments Antonio Quirici, President of the Cuoio di Toscana Consortium. "The reforestation project is just one of the initiatives the Consortium has undertaken, and we proudly highlight it on this important occasion. But it’s only the beginning: our commitment to a green and responsible economy continues with tangible efforts, such as the CDT Prize, which since 2021 has supported young talents and promoted creativity while respecting the environment."
The CDT Prize is an ongoing initiative that celebrates talent and sustainable innovation, raising awareness about the value of high-quality, Made in Italy products like leather. Launched in 2021, it has supported international designers and brands such as Thebe Magugu, Act n.1, Marine Serre, Marco Rambaldi, and Federico Cina.
This underscores the Consortium’s dedication to demonstrating how raw materials can meet the needs of both the market and the environment.
The leather produced by the seven tanneries that make up the Consortium, located in the San Miniato and Santa Croce sull’Arno districts in the province of Pisa, is plastic-free, recyclable, and derived from food industry waste that would otherwise be sent to landfills or incinerated.
Through slow vegetable tanning in vats—a practice that exemplifies circularity—raw hides are transformed into a highly durable and compostable material, globally recognized as a low-environmental-impact quality standard.
The seven tanneries adhere to strict sustainability criteria, which include animal welfare, water purification, solid waste recycling, and the use of renewable energy for production activities.
"Our commitment doesn’t stop here," concludes Antonio Quirici. "By 2025, we plan to launch new initiatives to protect the territory, aiming to raise public awareness and contribute further to environmental preservation. Every action we take is a step toward a larger commitment: safeguarding the health of our planet for future generations."
