Director Spike Lee makes a triumphant return with his latest film, Highest 2 Lowest, a modern and vibrant reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s celebrated Japanese thriller High and Low.

Set in the vibrant metropolis of New York, the film follows David King (Denzel Washington), a powerful music industry magnate who finds himself at the center of a moral drama when his chauffeur’s son is mistakenly kidnapped.

By his side, A$AP Rocky plays a charismatic rapper-antagonist, while Ice Spice makes her film debut.

The film premiered out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19, 2025, where it received an enthusiastic reception. Denzel Washington took the occasion to accept the Honorary Palme d’Or.

Critically acclaimed for its vibrant pacing, urban setting, and exploration of contemporary moral themes, the film is regarded as an intense reflection on the collision between art and commerce in the digital age.

In particular, A$AP Rocky’s performance has been described as “magnetic,” with some saying he manages to hold his own against Washington.
